Herring Salad

Herring Salad

The Herring Salad is called “Seledka pod Shuboy” in Russian. The literal translation is – “herring under a coat.” It is very popular in Russia and is quite a luxury item at any holiday gathering. The whole salad is made up of layers of vegetables and the herring. You are supposed to cut it as you would cut a cake. That way you can see the pretty layers of the salad.

You are probably thinking, what in the world? That’s a typical American reaction I get when I make/talk about the Herring Salad. However, this salad is awesome!… At least, to me. 😉
