The Herring Salad is called “Seledka pod Shuboy” in Russian. The literal translation is – “herring under a coat.” It is very popular in Russia and is quite a luxury item at any holiday gathering. The whole salad is made up of layers of vegetables and the herring. You are supposed to cut it as you would cut a cake. That way you can see the pretty layers of the salad.
You are probably thinking, what in the world? That’s a typical American reaction I get when I make/talk about the Herring Salad. However, this salad is awesome!… At least, to me.
Everyone is familiar with the traditional Potato salad. Well, the Russian “White Salad” or, as we also call it, “Olivie” is very similar, but it contains more ingredients and has a lot more flavor. I just recently made it for my Christmas party, and it was very yummy!
2 large pickles
6 cooked potatoes
6 cooked eggs
1 boiled medium-size steak (no fat)
1 can of sweet peas
1 small jar of mayo
I love decorating, especially for the holidays! However, I do not like to spend too much money on buying fancy decorations. Especially this year, when the economy is still on the downturn, I’ve been looking for ways to dress up my house for my Christmas party without going all out. Here are some quick things you can do to give your house a festive feel and make the guests feel cozy and welcomed:
1. Use leftover Christmas tree branches to create a pretty arrangement or a centerpiece.
